Collage

Date: 10th Jun 2024 @ 4:25pm

This half term we have been inspired by the amazing artworks created by Henri Matisse. He was known for his collage artwork. We learnt that Matisse has large pieces of paper prepared for him by his helpers, who would work hard to paint interesting colours. He would then cut out the sha[es he wanted and collaged them to create his artwork.

We first learnt how to collage, practising with different materials to create our own pieces. We focused on cutting, snipping, ripping and tearing to create different effects. We considered the placement of the papers and layered different materials. We then considered which adhesive would work best. We decided PVA glue and glue sticks would work as we didn't want to see bits of tape on top of our artwork.

For our final piece, we were inspired by our 'Plants' topic from our Science lesson. We enjoyed learning about different plants and decided to create some collaged botnatical leaves. We practised sketching different leaves, focusing on adding detail. We enjoyed exploring different leaves outside and skecthing in the sunshine.

Next, we prepared our collage paper. We mixed all our own paint. We knew from prrevious art lessons that blue and yellow make green. We added white for lighter shades and black for darker shades. We also experimented with mixing different amounts of blue and yellow to acheieve different tones of green. We then selected our collage paper materials. We found lots of old wallpapers with interesting textures and got busy covering them with green paint. We practised holding the paintbrushes and painting with different amounts of paint on the brush in order to achieve a variety of brushstrokes.

Finally, we got to rip, tear and cut our green paper. We sorted our papers from light green to dark green, and got busy collaging our leaves. We then used a really dark green to add finer detail. We had to practise cutting and snipping carefully to create thing strips.
